The French Pronunciation App
The UMD Pronunciation App was designed and built through the collaboration of students and faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
According to research on L2 pronunciation, the most important aspect in improving speaker accuracy is getting L2 speakers to hear their speaking errors. This app was designed to help train the user’s ear to do just that. We have identified the most phonemes most frequently identified as difficult by anglophone speakers and included them in various phrases in different positions (first, middle, final). Users can listen to a native male or female voice speak the phrase and then record their own attempt at the phrase. By playing back their own voice next to the native speaker, they can learn to identify errors in their own pronunciation.
While there are numerous versions of acceptable French, we have started with the version of French most often taught in the L2 classroom. We will add more French accents as time permits.
